MLB Power Rankings for May 25th- 2006

Although homerun stats have been watered down, Pujols continues a mind-boggling pace. Consider this: five players have hit 60 HR in a season, but only one has knocked in over 190 RBI, even in the recent “steroid-era” of baseball. Albert Pujols is on pace for 82 HR, but more impressive, would be if he could maintain his pace for 203 RBI.

His Cards drop a spot behind the red-hot Tigers, and the only thing keeping the Tigers from climbing on top of the whole sport is reputation. The big question this week is whether or not the Tigers are truly the best team in baseball.

Timeless: Chavez Vs. Taylor

By Matt Waters

They called him a “Philadelphia Fighter” a definition that may require further explanation of its rather blunt meaning. A Philadelphia Fighter doesn’t quit, a Philadelphia Fighter never stops throwing punches, bobbing and weaving, never ceases to extract all the flight and fury his body could possibly handle. A Philadelphia Fighter never plays it safe, never allows his score on a card to dictate strategy, and most importantly, until he collapses, a Philadelphia Fighter answers the count.

Always.

A Night at Yankee Stadium by Matt Waters

Act One: Rise

Four hours. Sleep is the price I pay for negligence. I put off doing my English research paper, on the delightful art of sportswriting, until one in the morning, eventually concluding it’s subtly insane contents at 3:00 AM. There I was, scattered sources splattered all over my desk, one corner nestling a brilliant Best of book featuring the work of Tom Verducci, in another, a hard as nails pigskin pamphlet written by Mike Freeman. The paper was decent, despite an out of nowhere diatribe against Mike Lupica featured on the bottom of page three. Bitterness is a powerful thing, my friends.

Adelman: Ready for Hire

Throughout the season, I wondered when the Maloof Brothers would fire Rick Adelman. The Sacramento Kings were last in the Pacific Division and were on pace to miss the playoffs since the 1997-1998 season. Their golden run appeared to be over.

Ron Artest did not think so. Artest arrived after the All-Star game and revived the Kings franchise, making them one of the hottest teams entering the playoffs. In doing so, he saved Adelman’s job or so I thought. The Maloof Brothers fired Rick Adelman last week.
His departure means Mike Bibby is the only person remaining from the 2002 team that almost dethroned the Lakers and won the championship.

Every player has moved on since then. Peja Stojakovich appears to be happy in Indiana, Chris Webber is back to his 20 points, 10 rebounds form in Philly, Doug Christie retired after numerous injuries, Vlade Divac earned a one year salary sitting on the Laker bench before finally retiring, Bobby Jackson provides instant offense off the bench in Memphis, and Jimmy Jackson continues the trend of hopping from team to team.

It’s Adelman’s turn to find his niche. Where will he coach next?

Bribery at its Best

I recently asked a friend of mine to accompany me to a Philadelphia Phillies game. Seeing as though the Phillies are only two and a half games behind the Mets, I figured it was about time for me to mosey my way down to Citizen Bank Park. “Is it dollar dog night?” my friend asked. “Um, no. But the Phillies are playing the Boston Red Sox.” I said with enthusiasm. “Oh, no dollar dog night, huh? Well are we getting a free bobble head?” he asked with his head slightly tilted like that of a bobble head. “No, but the Philles are playing the B-O-S-T-O-N R-E-D S-O-X. You know, one of the best teams in baseball? The Phillies don’t play them too often! We can even boo Curt Schilling and throw things at him!” I exclaimed. My friend hung his head down and said glumly, “Well I guess I’ll go. Maybe we’ll get a rally towel or something?”

Prelude to a Funeral

It’s a big enough disgrace to merit the immediate removal of the state of Maryland from the union.

Saturday, at a little past 6:00 p.m., Pimlico Racecourse allowed Barbaro to race after he broke through the gate without even glancing at him to see if he were all right solely to protect millions of dollars invested in this race that would have to be refunded if Barbaro was scratched. If this were any other race, they would have made sure the horse was still fit to run. But in order to save their business, they cleared the horse without examination.

MLB Power Rankings for May 18th- 2006

The Tigers are still on the rise, the Reds seem be falling. Yankees injuries might have the boss reaching for his pocketbook again, and a couple DC men reach for their pocketbooks and write MLB a big check. Woods makes his return to the rubber, but gets shelled. And Bonds hasn’t hit 714. Maybe he never will…

Hey Gary!

Since the beginning of the 2004 season, I’ve liked Gary Sheffield.  I didn’t like him in 2003 when George thought it best to sign him over Vlad Guerrero, but it only took a few screaming foul balls down the third base line to change my opinion of Sheff.  In fact, I think I can pinpoint the moment that I moved from “grumble grumble, we should have signed Vlad,” to “man, Sheff rocks!”  I was on the phone with my father, and it was right around the time he rhetorically asked, “man, does anyone hit the ball harder than Sheffield?”

And I remember thinking to myself, “no, no one hits the ball harder than this man.”  It just kept getting better from there, with Sheff putting up monster numbers, even trumping those of fellow new acquisition Alex Rodriguez, on his way to runner-up in the AL MVP voting.  Actually, the downward spiral of Sheff began right there, with his misunderstanding of the meaning of Most Valuable Player.
