Dead and Buried- Yet Still Going Strong

The verbal barrage came from sports writers all over the country. A half-hearted effort, they said. They are clearly outmatched, they said. The coach is irresponsible for publicly bashing his players, they said. This team is clearly broken, they said. No chance in even competing with Italy or the rest of the world, they also said.

So where are all of these opining “soccer experts,” now? Well, they’re resting, and not just their mouths and their pens. They are resting their bodies, getting to bed early, so they can get up and cheer for their precious U.S. World Cup team, the team they left for dead just a half a week before.

Will Blue Devils Continue to Roll?

A record was set tonight. The all-time Duke record for the most consecutive wins to start a season was tied today by this year’s Blue Devils, who moved to 17-0 with a win over N.C. State last night at Cameron Indoor Stadium. A win at Georgetown would set a record that no other Duke team has equaled. Ever. That means by any Duke team. Not Laettner and Hurley. Not Brand and Dunleavy. Not Battier and Williams, and the list goes on and on. This isn’t an imposing, fear-striking, dominating Number 1 team. So what gives? Why do they keep winning? And more importantly, shouldn’t they be stopped?

Everyone can now breathe a sigh of relief. Alex Rodriguez has finally succumbed to intense pressure from Major League Baseball, and, as a generous good will act to fans across the world, has decided that he will play in the World Baseball Classic this March. I think I speak for everyone when I say “Alex, nobody cares.”

Steeling The Dream Season

There were a lot of reasons to be glued to your television on Sunday afternoon. This year’s feel good, team to root for was finally playing it’s first meaningful game in a month, and it’s first such game since meaningful took on a whole new meaning for it’s head coach. As they do every once awhile however, the sports gods reminded us that the game isn’t played on paper, or even in the movie theater. The Pittsburgh Steelers, who were written off by just about everyone in the football world three weeks ago, steam rolled the Indianapolis Colts early, and as if we were the audience during a fall-laden figure skating routine, we watched in shock, unable to turn away.

The Casual Fan’s Guide To Sox/Yanks

With yet another epic series between the Yankees and Red Sox looming, it seems to be all anyone is interested in the sport world. We all know these two powerhouses well enough to expect, tense, close baseball games, so needless to say that is the predominant interest for most people as they sit on their couches with remote in hand. However, as a die-hard Met fan, the score is really the last thing I’m interested in.

A Thank You To My Amazins

They say that it’s time to pack it in. That there is nothing left to play for. That it is time to throw away those scorecards and throw on your favorite football uniform. There’s no denying that unless you are the Red Sox or the Yankees fan, your team’s role is that of the “spoiler”; the least glorified and most under-appreciated role in the pennant race, and one few fans want to be a part of.

However, as a diehard Met fan, I’ve never been as proud of my team as I have this week.
