MLB Power Rankings 24 August 2005

Here are the MLB power rankings for another week. Comments are always appreciated.

1(1) 79-47
Scott Rolen decided to have season ending surgery on his shoulder. Obviously this isn’t good news for the Cards, but Abraham Nunez has played surprisingly well filling in for Rolen, posting a very respectable .373 OBP.
2(2) 75-47
Chicago is really struggling right now, and they’ve only won one game in their last nine contests. They’re still not truly in danger of losing the division lead, but if they continue to play like this it could definitely happen.
3(3) 72-51
Curt Schilling is scheduled to start tomorrow against the Royals, which is probably a good move. They can find out if he’s ready to start yet, and if he’s not they still have a good chance of winning since they’re playing KC.
4(4) 72-53
Vlad Guerrero has continued to be impressive this month, putting up an OBP of .489 and failing to get on base in only one game. He’s also one HR shy of 300 for his career.
5(8) 70-56
Jhonny Peralta has been fantastic this season. He leads all shortstops in slugging percentage, and is second in OPS, trailing Miguel Tejada by .002 points.
6(7) 69-55
The Yankees are planning on signing Ruben Rivera (yes the one that swiped Jeter’s stuff). They want to judge whether or not he can help the defensively in CF.
7(5) 71-55
47 year old Julio Franco has been a good contributor for the Braves this year, which, at his age, is pretty ridiculous. Obviously he can’t play every day, but used sparingly he’s been pretty effective.
8(11) 67-58
Minnesota claimed Alfonso Soriano off waivers, but couldn’t work out a trade this time around either. It’s probably a good move, seeing as how they would’ve had a tough time keeping him around at the end of the season. They’re playing pretty well at the moment without him anyways.
9(12) 68-59
The Phillies are currently on a road trip against two NL West teams, and they’re probably pretty pleased about it. Philadelphia has a better winning percentage against the NL West than any other team.
10(6) 68-56
Since taking the AL West lead over the Angels, the Athletics are just 2-8. Obviously, they’ve lost that lead.
11(14) 66-59
Florida needs Juan Encarnacion back soon, Jeff Conine isn’t going to cut it in RF.
12(9) 66-59
Houston has the most home wins in the majors, but dropped seven of 13 during their last homestand.
13(15) 65-60
Mike Piazza went on the DL after getting hit with a line drive, joining Kaz Matsui, Mike Cameron and Doug Mientkiewicz.
14(10) 65-60
Ryan Zimmerman will most likely complete his remarkable rise to the MLB next week, so as to be eligible for the playoffs. The Nationals drafted him as a third baseman with the fourth overall pick, but have moved him to shortstop in the hopes that he can outperform Cristian Guzman and help with a playoff push. Zimmerman has only played seven games at short for the AA Harrisburg Senators, committing four errors.
15(20) 61-62
Detroit has won five games in a row, including a game against the Red Sox in which they turned five double plays.
16(13) 63-62
In contrast to the Tigers, the Blue Jays have lost five games in a row.
17(16) 62-63
Xavier Nady’s first career grand slam was a memorable one, winning the game for the Padres in the top of the 13th inning.
18(19) 62-64
The Brewers called up Prince Fielder again, but he hasn’t played much at all. Perhaps he can give the Brewers that little nudge up and over .500.
19(17) 60-64
Melvin Mora hasn’t homered for more than a month. His last jack was July 18th.
20(18) 61-65
Derek Lee tied the record for most home runs by a Cubs first baseman Monday with his 37th of the season.
21(22) 58-67
Willy Mo Pena and Austin Kearns, who have shared time in RF this year for the Reds, have a combined 24 home runs.
22(21) 57-68
The Dodgers put Odalis Perez on the DL, in all likelihood ending any outside hope they had of getting into the playoffs.
23(17) 58-66
Texas got swept by Tampa Bay last week and Kenny Rogers continued his poor second half, giving up six runs in six innings.
24(25) 55-70
Peter Magowan, the Giants’ owner, made a really bad decision in saying that he wouldn’t have given up the right to void the final year of Barry Bonds’ contract if he would’ve known that Barry wouldn’t play at all this year. The only thing that could possibly come of that statement is Bonds getting upset.
25(24) 58-69
This is the first time that Arizona has been more than ten games under .500 this season.
26(27) 54-72
The Pirates lost Jose Castillo for the season, and received another scare when Zach Duke hurt himself running the bases. Duke’s fine though, and Oliver Perez has started a rehab assignment in AAA Indianapolis.
27(26) 53-71
The Mariners are tied for second in the AL with Tampa Bay for the team with the most rookies that have seen action (they each have 12). The Royals lead the AL with 14.
28(28) 51-75
11 of Jorge Cantu’s 20 home runs have come as a second baseman. Sadly, that beats the club record for homers by a 2B by six.
29(29) 47-78
Byung-Hyun Kim hasn’t worked out for the Rockies at all this year. He’s got just one win in his last nine starts.
30(30) 40-83
The Rockies have lost a club record nine games at home, but they did win two games in Oakland over the weekend to break their massive losing streak.

small correction “The Phillies are currently on a road trip against two NL West teams, and they’re probably pretty pleased about it. Philadelphia has a better winning percentage against the NL West than any other team.”

Should be:

“Philadelphia has a better winning percentage against the NL West than any other division.”

i’ll fix it All I know is that last night at SBC, the hits were raining down on the Giants. I really don’t know what to do if the Phils make the playoffs.

What I meant was that they have the best winning percentage against NL West teams than any other team in the league. It’s like .730 or something, Philly kills the NL West.

how do you get color??? None of the codes I’ve tried have worked. I’m putting together the college football power rankings and I want color, but it does not seem to work…….

oops My bad.  I guess there are two ways of interpreting that sentence, and mine was dead wong.
