Missing the Point

Dave Bliss should have been shot.

As it happened, Patrick Dennehy got shot by Carlton Dotson and died. All that happened to Bliss was that he lost his job and the NCAA has basically barred him from coaching for the next ten years.But now Bliss is one of five finalists for the coaching job of the Dakota Wizards of the CBA. Somehow, despite his history of calling a person who had been tragically murdered a “drug-dealer” in the midst of an investigation, some team is willing to give him a second chance?

If I were in charge of this great country, I would make sure Dave Bliss was behind bars. He lied to our police force during a murder investigation to save his own ass, which did not happen anyway.

I would not allow this guy to ever work even at a McDonalds again.

I believe in second chances, but this guy has not done the time to earn that second chance.

And he never will.

Right now, he is about to get a job coaching a minor league team for a meager salary. Alright, that is some punishment.

And in only ten years he can be back coaching college basketball. Well, we got a sentence.

But he still has that chance to coach and build up his resume.

In the mean time, Baylor, which already got rid of all the people associated with the disaster, looses its entire non-conference schedule for one year and is on probation for five years. As well, it almost got the death penalty. Only SMU football in 1987 ever received the penalty and only Alabama football since then came within one vote of receiving it.

But Dave Bliss, a criminal, walks free and barely suffers while Baylor is on probation and the Dennehy family is without a son.

Bliss was doing a noble thing in paying the tuition of Dennehy and another Baylor player. Yes, he was doing one noble thing.

But that is still illegal.

Secondly, he refused to report failed drug examinations by several different players because he did not want to have to suspend the players.

That is neither noble nor legal.

Yes, this is the type of man I want the youth of America around.

And even though this is a professional team that is going to hire Bliss, he will still be the role model. The entire ten man roster is filled with people in their twenties, the same age group as most of the people Dave Bliss coached at Baylor and before. Not a single player graduated college before 1999.

So how can he be trusted now?

I know that North Dakota has a low crime rate, but how can Bliss be trusted?

He watched a drug dealer get killed in Waco who had never before been a drug dealer and thought it perfectly fine to tell the mother and stepfather this lie.

God knows what he’ll do now.

It is one thing to give someone a second chance when he made a mistake. It is another thing to give a criminal a second chance when he hasn’t served his time.

Stay home for ten years, then we’ll talk.

Or better yet, give Carlton Dotson a gun and have him shoot you. See how that feels.

And when I’m asked, I’ll just tell the media you were a drug dealer.
