Impressed- depressed and neutral- feelings after Week 13 of college football

I’m just sad it’s Week 13 of the college football season. Honestly…IMPRESSED

Florida

After a pretty disappointing season (and 2004, mind you), the Gators put fireurbanmeyer.com on hold with an excellent 34-7 victory over slumping in-state rival, the Florida State Seminoles. How good was CJ Leak? Not as good as the D  and special teams, who picked off FSU QB Drew Weatherford 4 times and took a blocked punt to the house.

Virginia Tech

OK, so a few weeks ago their season was over, and Miami were in the ACC Championship game. As Lee Corso says, “not so fast, my friend.” Tech’s defense is back, and the offence, which was kept by North Carolina for the first half, went into overdrive in the second half, scoring 21 points in a blistering third quarter. Give some love up to Tech RB Cedric Humes, who ran for 134 yards and 2 TD in the 30-3 stomping.

Kansas

The Jayhawks, down from a 14-3 half-time deficit against divisional rival Iowa State, scored 15 points in the fourth quarter to win out 24-21 in overtime and make their team bowl-eligible. And they worsened the day for the Iowa State, stopping the Cyclones from going to the Big 12 Championship game.

Texas A&M

Those who went to the game expected the Longhorns to blow out the Aggies in this bitter interstate rivalry. But as we all know, rivalry games aren’t easy (unless you’re Florida), and going to College Station certainly wasn’t for Texas. The Aggies looked a hell of a lot better than a below .500 team, and at times, made Vince Young (who had 162 yards, 1 TD and 1 INT, with only 19 yards rushing) look ordinary.

Oklahoma

We all thought Adrian Peterson and the Oklahoma Sooners were dead and buried when UCLA trounced them in September. But 237 yards rushing for Peterson, 206 yards passing for QB Rhett Bomar and a 42-12 blowout of cross-state rival Oklahoma State, we can truly say this: Oklahoma are going to be a force again in 2006.

Nebraska

Does one dominating performance put the Nebraska Cornhuskers in the “back” section? Probably not, because the talent in Lincoln is nowhere near what it was under Tom Osborne. But it’s certainly better. Give some love to Huskers QB Zac Taylor, who threw for 392 yards and 2 TD, and the Nebraska defense, who limited Colorado to 212 total yards, and more importantly, 3 yards.

Grambling

I wasn’t so much impressed by the Bayou Classic, I was certainly impressed by the performance of Grambling’s 260 pound QUARTERBACK, Bruce Eugene, who threw for 418 yards and 6 TD. Did someone hold up a sign for Dunkin’ Donuts in the end zones? We think so!

Arkansas

Wow. So this team can play after all. The Razorbacks had us all cheering with a  remarkable comeback at LSU in Baton Rouge. They played with heart absent for most of the season, and pushed Tigers’ fans hearts to the hilt in their 19-17 loss.

Stanford

Was this the same team who lost at home to UC Davis? The Cardinal, led by QBs Trent Edwards and T.C. Ostrander, put up 347 passing yards on a sixth-ranked team that was meant to beat them by two touchdowns. There could be hope (in 2006, anyway) yet.

NEUTRAL

Georgia/Georgia Tech

If there’s anything that `Good Ole-Fashioned Hate’ gave us was good ole-fashioned defense.  Both offensive stars DJ Shockley  (Georgia) and Reggie Ball (Georgia Tech) were held to only 353 yards of passing, 3 TD (2 for Shockley, 1 for Ball, and 3 INT (2 for Ball, 1 for Shockley). It wasn’t a matter of errors all over the field, it was defenses making plays after plays, stopping each team from gaining any sort of strangehold on the game. Of course, Georgia will come out saying how happy they were to get away from Atlanta with the win. Funny that, they’d be happy beating LSU in the SEC Championship 14-7 next week, too.

Texas

The Longhorns went into a hornets’ nest and came out with a few stings but no crippling bites. Vince Young simply wasn’t that good today, but good enough to seal the victory. Oh, and the other player on the Longhorns, RB Ramonce Taylor had 133 yards total offence and 2 TDs. Expect them to play better against Colorado.

Miami

Er, they were horrible against Georgia Tech, and they weren’t much better in Saturday’s victory over Virginia. Thank God they aren’t playing in the ACC title game against Florida State- it would have been offensive to look at!

Notre Dame

Still think this is the best 2-loss team in the country? Pit them against Auburn in a bowl game, that’s what I say! Whilst Brady Quinn, Jeff Samardzija and Darius Walker are as nasty as the Brady Bunch were nice, let’s be honest, the defense (who gave up 336 yards and 31 points against a team who lost to UC Davis) are downright horrible.

LSU

I don’t care if a win’s a win, beating Arkansas by only two points goes to prove one thing: LSU aren’t the third best team in the nation, despite what the polls might say.

DEPRESSED

Colorado

The Buffs were so bad at Nebraska LAST Saturday that I feel truly sorry for them going into THIS Saturday’s showdown with the Texas Longhorns on Saturday. No, I seriously do.

Iowa State

14-3 up at half-time at Kansas, the Cyclones were playing well and coasting to the Big 12 Championship game. But no, a Kansas comeback and a missed kick from ISU kicker Bret Culbertson in overtime later, and it’s Colorado who plays next week against Texas, not the Cyclones.

Florida State

Three reasons for Florida State to be rather down. One, they lost to Florida 34-7. Two, they’ve lost 3 times in a row and looked awful in each game. And three, they are playing one of the best teams in the nation, Virginia Tech. T    here are two things you could blame: Drew Weatherford, who threw 2 picks, to go with his 14 others this season, and FSU’s suddenly horrible defense, who have given up 89 points in three games.

Wisconsin

The Barry Alvarez era is over at Camp Randall. Suddenly spending four years of university at Wisconsin doesn’t seem so appealing, does it?
