MLB Power Rankings July 6 2005

Here’s the power rankings through the first half of the MLB season.

1(1) 56-26
There are rumors about Jason Schmidt going to the White Sox, which would obviously give them the most ridiculous rotation in the MLB with Schmidt, Buehrle, Garcia, Garland, and Conteras.
2(3) 53-30
The Cardinals are sending six players to the All-Star game, the most in the MLB. The Scott Rolen selection is questionable but the rest deserve it (although I’d like to see Felipe Lopez starting over David Eckstein).
3(2) 51-32
The Angels’ record after the first half of the year was 50-31, the best start in club history..
4(4) 51-32
I would’ve liked to see Jose Guillen on the All-Star team, but the only person he could have replaced is Luis Gonzalez, the D-Backs lone selection.
5(8) 46-35
The Twins have continued to hold onto the Wild Card, but may not have it for long if Cleveland continues their outstanding play.
6(5) 47-37
It would be nice to see John Smoltz, a Detroit area native start the All-Star game there. He certainly is deserving, a perfect 5-0 with a 1.54 ERA in his last five starts.
7(10) 46-37
The Indians have been playing well of late, and their bullpen might be even better after sending down Jason Davis to make room for Fernando Cabrera, who had a 62/9 K/BB ratio in Buffalo to go with a sub-1 ERA.
8(6) 47-35
Curt Schilling clearly isn’t ready to pitch for the Red Sox, but they really need him to help widen the gap a bit in the AL East.
9(9) 45-39
The Darrell May and Tim Redding for Paul Quantrill trade is basically garbage for trash, but at least Bruce Bochy won’t be tempted to actually use Quantrill…right?
10(13) 43-39
Mariano Rivera got off to a slow start, but he has been his usual unhittable self so far this year. Opposing batters are hitting just .145 against him.
11(17) 43-39
After practicing on the water cooler, Kenny Rogers apparently felt confident enough to take on a camera, netting him a 20 game suspension (which will likely be 15 after the appeals process).
12(7) 44-39
The Oriole’s plan to go with a four man rotation, combined with the other injuries they’ve sustained, hasn’t been working out so well. They were 1-5 last week.
13(12) 42-39
Sure, Dontrelle Willis has had a great first half, but the real test will come in the next half of the year as he tries to lay down the belief that he can’t last the whole season.
14(19) 41-41
Oakland has continued to be ridiculously hot, they’re now 17-4 in their last 21 games.
15(14) 42-41
Toronto’s won 12 of their last 15 games against AL East opponents, allowing them to remain somewhat close (5.5 games back).
16(16) 41-42
Neither Carlos Beltran nor Mike Piazza should be going to the All-Star game this season. Cliff Floyd can’t be pleased about his teammate basically taking his All-Star spot.
17(18) 42-42
Jim Thome was placed on the DL again, allowing the Phillies to call up Ryan Howard. Howard is hitting .371 with 16 HR’s in 61 games with Philadelphia’s AAA affiliate this year.
18(23) 40-42
I thought Morgan Ensberg and Roy Oswalt were virtual locks for the All-Star game, but apparently not. I’d be really surprised if Ensberg didn’t replace the injured Cesar Izturis and Oswalt didn’t win the last man balloting.
19(21) 40-43
After going eight innings and only giving up two runs Monday against Florida, Ben Sheets has made a quality start in seven of his last eleven appearances.
20(11) 40-42
The Cubs are on a six game losing streak. Guess it’s karma for Aramis Ramirez making the All-Star game over Morgan Ensberg.
21(15) 41-44
Arizona has continued to slump, going 2-6 in their last eight games. Even so, they remain only 4.5 games back from the Padres.
22(22) 39-44
The slumping Dodgers won’t be helped at all by J.D. Drew’s broken wrist, which will cost him an unknown amount of games.
23(20) 38-43
Jeremy Bonderman and Brandon Inge are both borderline All-Stars who should’ve been in the game since it’s in Detroit.
24(24) 36-46
Kip Wells pitched a CG shutout against Philadelphia yesterday, hopefully raising his trade value a bit.
25(26) 34-48
The Giants try to avoid the sweep against the Reds tonight, but they’ve already hit their lowest point this season at 14 games below .500.
26(25) 35-47
I really don’t understand why the Mariners released Brett Boone. It’s not like they’re in the midst of a playoff run or anything. They should’ve at least let the guy ride the bench.
27(27) 33-50
Felipe Lopez is the Reds’ lone All-Star representative, and one of the few cases in which I support the rule of one All-Star per team. If it weren’t for that rule, the selection likely would’ve gone to one of the (less deserving) big market shortstops like Neifi Perez.
28(28) 29-53
Byung-Hyun Kim didn’t allow a run for six innings on Monday, but the Rockies still lost.
29(30) 27-55
The Kansas City’s 26-55 start was the worst first half in franchise history.
30(29) 27-57
The D-Rays called up Joey Gathright after an injury to Alex Gonzalez. The amount of young talent Tampa has in the outfield is unreal.

request next week, can the Phillies be dead last? they stink and have shown no heart whatsoever since the As series.

hahaha Hey, at least they aren’t the worst team in Phillies history like the Royals are.
