Barry went bonkers when asked about sprinter Tim Montgomery’s alleged testimony that the person who supplied Montgomery with performance enhancing drugs also supplied Bonds with similar drugs. According to the AP, Bonds unleashed a “flurry of expletives” against Tim Montgomery. Remember when Turk Wendell basically said, “look at him! he’s obviously on steroids!” and Bonds went nuts? At that time, the Associated Press said that Bonds “chastised” Turk. I saw that clip folks and chastised isn’t quite the word I’d use. Bonds called him a little bitch and said he was chickenshit. If that’s chastising, I wonder what “flurry of expletives” means.Does anyone else out there think that Bonds doth protest too much? Has anyone who has been accused of doping ever just come out and say, “Yup, you got me. Enough steroids to kill a horse.” Of course not! Deny. Deny. Deny. I did not have sexual relations with that woman! Previously, Tim Montgomery denied ever using any steroids to the press. It turned into a whole different story under oath in front of a grand jury.
Whether the truth ever comes out, whether Bonds (or Marion Jones, or Lance Armstrong) ever used steroids, it just doesn’t matter anymore. Their reputations, and especially Bonds’, are already tainted in the public opinion. And I’m not so sure that I feel sorry for them at all.
There are two proverbs that fit here. First is “if you lie down with dogs, you wake up with fleas.” Athletes should not associate themselves with gamblers and drug dealers. It’s pretty simple. No one can make any connections to you and point shaving or you and steroids if you don’t know those people. If your trainer also is busted for trafficking steroids, is it that much of a leap for us to think perhaps you used some of those drugs? Even Jessica Simpson could make that connection. The second is “if it looks like a duck, and walks like a duck…” Countless people have noted Bonds’ substantial size increase in body and in melon since he was a rookie. They also mentioned how much his HR total has increased. You make the call.
The humor in all of this is every time that Bonds starts going off on people. He said, “I ain’t never met Tim Montgomery. I don’t know Tim Montgomery. I’ve never seen the dude in my life.” Barry, that isn’t the point! The guy never said he gave you the steroids, he said he was told by the same guy who supplied him that he supplied you. You see the difference there?
Bonds also said, “It’s stupid. I didn’t read the thing. I just heard about it.” Seems to me that Barry is doing a lot of hearing about stuff and reacting to it. Maybe those racist Boston people slipped him the steroids without him knowing.
Finally, my favorite part of the AP article:
“It bothers me when people I don’t even know are saying stuff about me,” said Bonds, who hasn’t homered in nine games. “Next time, if I know for sure so-and-so, they’re going to talk to my lawyer from now on, I guarantee that. If any of them statements are true, they’re going to talk to my attorney, I guarantee that — in a lawsuit. … See you in court, brother.”
I love how the AP felt not having homered in nine games is germane to this issue at all. And I have no idea what Bonds is saying in this last paragraph. I’ve read it about 20 times and it makes about as much sense to me as Jews for Jesus.
