Come on Tuna- you should know better

It always amuses me that in this day and age, people can still stick their foot in their mouth.  From AP: Parcells said about quarterbacks coach Sean Payton and defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer. “Mike wants the defense to do well, and Sean, he’s going to have a few … no disrespect for the Orientals, but what we call Jap plays. OK. Surprise things.”

Because Parcells is old school (and old), this should be taken with a grain of salt.  I personally think a lot of things are blown out of proportion, especially when it comes to be PC. Still, it’s amazing that someone as high profile as he is hasn’t gone through a “sensitivity training” course by the Cowboys or the NFL.  Parcells added, “And you know, sometimes when a defensive player arrives behind the play and misses the tackle or pass defense, we says that he’s on CPT… no disrespect for the negroes… Colored People Time.  OK.  Late.”

Obviously I made this last quote up.  But it’s tantamount to what he actually did say.

I’m sure Parcells is very embarrassed by this event and now he knows better.  It’s time to move on.

Although I’m really confused about the reference to the Japanese and a sneak attack on Pearl Harbor.  If I remember correctly, the Germans attacked Pearl Harbor.

Parcells is from WEST POINT These people are the backbone of our COUNTRY. He was probably trained to hate Japanese people when he was young and its stuck with him.

This quote is harmless.

Truthfully – I hate Parcells – but this is the same crap that’s killing me.

Anytime anyone says “Faggot” or they don’t like “Gays” – 5 seconds later they have to issue a press release apologizing. Whatever. Like a press release is going to change how people think.

the kids, man! It’s not so much that it will change how people think.. because it won’t. It also won’t change how people are raising their kids – whether to be bigoted or not.  The issue here is that the press and people in high profile situations should not negatively influence those who do not know any better.

Maybe some 7 year old in Dallas all of the sudden thinks the Japs are sneaky.  Or some kid in Minnesota thinks that calling someone a faggot is funny.

Sometimes being PC is way overboard. But the point here is that let kids learn their bigoted ways from their relatives, not from athletes and coaches.  Despite what Barkley said, athletes are role models, good or bad.

Look, I say, the children are our future.  Teach them well and let them lead the way. Show them a sense of pride.

…now you’ve done it… But you don’t really want to go there.
Because if you do – let me talk about

Howard Stern on free airwaves
FOX’s Reality Shows
South Park
RAP MUSIC

Etc. Etc.

You really want to open that can up? I had this argument with my boy at lunch the other day. I think (And I listen to him) that Stern needs to accept the FCC’s rules. Think of the kid sitting on the bus stop with his head phone on listening to 50 Cent and then putting the radio on and hearing HOWARD STERN.

And you are worried about Bill Parcells saying his coach calls JAP PLAYS?

Come on man.

the difference is profit I am all for freedom of speech.

The difference here is that Parcells didnt intend to cause a stir…and he should’ve known better. The people you listed above are deliberately trying to shake things up.

What am I saying? It’s all about the parents. They should teach their kids how to differentiate from commercial crap and inadvertant crap.  They might save their kids from a lifetime of listening to pop music like 50 cent.

There are no winners in this type of debate.  This is a sports site and I don’t want to take it in this direction.  I only posted this story because it was Parcells.

PC? no need to be PC just for the sake of being PC, and i agree, you won’t change the way people think by issuing an apology.

the reason you issue an apology is because what a person says (especially when that person is in the public eye like Parcells) can have consequences, like offending a whole bunch of people.

as Vin mentioned in the original article, what do you think the public outcry would have been if Parcells had called them N—-R PLAYS? that would have pissed off a hell of a lot of people, no doubt. well, JAP PLAYS pisses off a lot of people too. even the use of ORIENTALS is offensive to some. if you don’t find Parcell’s words offensive, that’s fine, but don’t assume that no one is offended.

Stern, South Park, rap music, etc. are what they are, and customers know what they are when they choose to listen or watch or not. seeing a coach on ESPN or your local news use racist terms? different.

Protecting Kids or not? Stern, South Park, rap music, etc. are what they are, and customers know what they are when they choose to listen or watch or not. seeing a coach on ESPN or your local news use racist terms? different.

* Not really. VIN said “what about the KIDS?” Well if we are on a crusade to protect kids from what they hear than we are opening up a larger argument.

kids well, one can tell his or her kids “no, you can’t watch South Park” or “no, you can’t buy that CD”. is that parent supposed to also say “no, you can’t ever watch SportsCenter or the local news”?

you’re right, we can’t totally prevent kids from hearing bad things (with each parent determining what is “bad” for their kids), but it gets much harder if you can’t count on the “harmless” programs being harmless.

I guess… …But let me ask this:

Is it really Parcells who is broadcasting this to kids? Or SPORSTCENTER who decides to air it?
