No Need to Make a Splash

The next head coach of the Atlanta Falcons lies in Emmitt Thomas. So what if he's 64? The players want to play for him. And in my decade of being a fan, there has NEVER been a coach before that the Falcons wanted to play for.

Look at the Miami Dolphins: in 2004 they wanted to play for Jim Bates, even beating the New England Patriots in a remarkable comeback. But instead they hired Nick Saban and look where they are three years later?

Even if you only get three years out of Thomas, you're going to get three years of tough, grind-it-out football, the type of football that no previous coach had been able to motivate the Falcons to play. Thomas is the right choice and should be offered the job. That's my two cents.

ESPN's best college football rivalries

This was from 2006, but I just saw it for the first time.

It might have been the most embarrassing list ESPN has ever made. Many of the rivalries in the top 10 weren't even the best rivalry involving those teams.

  1. Florida-Georgia
  2. Lehigh-Lafayette
  3. Grambling-Southern
  4. Harvard-Yale
  5. USC-Notre Dame
  6. Texas-Oklahoma
  7. Miami-Florida State
  8. Army-Navy
  9. Michigan-Ohio State
  10. Alabama-Auburn

  11. Florida-Georgia
Florida's biggest rival is Florida State; Georgia's is Auburn. How do neither of those get on this list while this one does? This one truly makes no sense.

9. Lehigh-Lafayette
Okay, they've played more than anyone else, but there are 50 better rivalries. This is just a "We're smarter than you" pick.

8. Grambling-Southern
I actually agree with this pick; go figure.

7. Harvard-Yale
This one is way too low.

6. USC-Notre Dame
This is more of a "2005 they played a great game" pick. Yes, it's a huge rivalry, but Notre Dame-Michigan is bigger and USC-UCLA is at least comparable.

5. Texas-Oklahoma
Yes, this should be here.

4. Miami-Florida State
What?!? This is the worst selection by far. Florida was Miami's biggest rival until the end of the 1980s and Miami has NEVER been the most important game to Florida State. NEVER! FSU fans would rather go 1-11 and beat Florida while Miami wins the title than go 6-6 and lose to Florida like Florida did last year. This is a joke. I don't get this one at all. Pure bullshit.

3. Army-Navy
How this is not #1 is beyond me.

2. Michigan-Ohio State
At least they had the balls not to put this or Army-Navy at #1.

1. Auburn-Alabama
Because this game has little impact outside of Alabama, we forget how great this rivalry truly is. Honestly, I have no objections to this being number, although I personally would have it #3.

Guarantee for 2007

I rarely make guarantees. I guaranteed that Purge would finish last in the 2005 (2004? I forget) Belmont despite being the second betting choice, and was correct. And beyond that, I really haven't guaranteed much, other than Miami over Temple.

Anyway, here's my guarantee for 2007.

The Atlanta Falcons will, under no circumstance, win more than two games during the 2007 season. They are easily on the same page as the 1972-1973 Oilers, 1976 Buccaneers, 1990 Patriots, 1991 Colts, or 2003 Cardinals. Besides Alge Crumpler, they lack a single player who is a bonafide starter for any other team on offense. Defensively, they have the overrated douchebag CB and failed to fill any of their holes (OLB, DL, S) during the offseason.

They were pitiful last year and will be even worse this year.

Projected record: 0-16.

I'm not even joking. If they win a game, it's a serious upset.

I Made Gregg Doyel's Hate Mail

I hope he reads this and sues me for copywrite infringement:

From: Burton D.

I'm not sure where you learned how to write or where SportsLine.com found you, but that isn't the point. No able journalist uses the term "scumbags" to refer to human beings, except maybe to refer to politicians. There are much better, more mature words that someone with your experience should be able to use in lieu of scumbag. This is your biggest problem. You fall back on name-calling because you don't know how to convey a point. But I do want to thank you. The fact that a respected organization employs you gives me hope that anyone can be a nationally published sports journalist.

Anyone but you, Burton. By the time I'm done torpedoing your name in journalism circles, your résumé from Rice University -- looked you up -- will be radioactive.

Bragging time for me

Two years ago, I wrote an article to get Tom Coughlin fired. Now that he is about to get fired, I must bring something up: if you google "fire tom coughlin" or fire tom coughlin, my article is up first.

I'm sure people are googling that, so that means two years later, my article may be good advertising for sportscolumn.com. Weird, huh....

Just bragging. I feel that I should every now and then....

ESPN should focus a little more on accuracy

Dan McCarney was never fired. He resigned. That is not being fired. At least when cbssportsline makes such a mistake, you can easily email them and they'll correct it.

ESPN? No such option.

They don't give a shit that their writers not just are bad writers,  but haven't a care about what really happened. At least they're slightly better than the Associated Press. AP writers border on hysterically bad.
