A family member of mine recently inherited a set of signed 9x11 pictures of the 1950 Red Sox team. They are in the original envelope and are in very good condition. This is the team including greats like Ted Williams, Johnny Pesky, Dom DiMaggio, Bobby Doerr, Vern Stephens, etc...

More on: Competitive Eating (all tags)

In the only sport which we can truly claim to be 100% American, it is a tiny little Japanese man who claims the throne.  Takeru Kobayashi has become the Jordan of professional eating; mainly the annual Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest.  Yes, hot dog eating is our main claim to fame as an American public.  It doesn't hurt that bad when we lose a soccer match on the world stage, but to lose at this, Americans everywhere are feeling the sting.  And really, we didn't just lose; we got obliterated... 6 years in a row.

Andrea Bargnani is coming into the 2006 NBA Draft as one of the highest rated prospects on the board.  This 7-foot, 248 pound Italian is most highly touted for his unique combination of immense size and great perimeter play.  The hype surrounding Bargnani is so extreme, the Toronto Raptors are even considering drafting him with the first overall pick.

What's wrong with athletes lately? It seems like everywhere you turn, somebody in sports is getting arrested or doing something wrong. Today's victim was B.J. Upton, who was arrested and charged with DUI. Upton is a top prospect in the Devil Rays farm system who has already seen some success at the big league level.

Papelbon's New Look

Red Sox closer, Jonathan Papelbon, is now sporting a brand new mohawk.  As the story goes, Sox third basemen, Kevin Youkilis, bet Papelbon that he would start the season with ten straight scoreless innings.  The loser had to get a mohawk and Papelbon's scoreless, 2 1/3 inning outing last night against Toronto bought him a brand new look.  I'm sure there are a lot of guys around the league that would go for a new haircut in exchange for success like Papelbon's.

It's finally over.  It's a good thing Rollins didn't break DiMaggio's sacred record.  Not that Rollins would've broken the streak anyway, but if he had, the MLB would've had a mess on their hands.  People would've been going nuts to get their opinion out there of whether or not it should count as the same record.  Now if we could get rid of the Barry Bonds scandal, we could actually focus on what's important... baseball.

The Oakland A's are the trendy pick this year to win the AL West and the newest ESPN Magazine has them winning the World Series.  I've checked their roster and other than the aging, oft injured Frank Thomas and the perennial head case, Milton Bradley, I have not found many new impact players on a team that didn't even make the playoffs last year.

Where's the Love for Morrison?

Adam Morrison is the best player in college basketball.  Let's start by just throwing that out there.  He led Gonzaga into the Sweet 16 without the help that guys like J.J. Redick, Glen Davis, Joakim Noah, and Rudy Gay received on their teams.  Granted J.P. Batista is a very good big man, that's where the list of Gonzaga stars ends.
