Latest Sports Commentary and OpinionStories By JDWCBy JDWC, Section Other Sports
The perfect way to start off my 2008 Sportscolumn writing season is to create one of my favorite things in the world: a top ten list. I decided, what with all the upsets in college football this year, that a list of the top ten upsets would suffice nicely this article. But then I thought, "There's no way I can handle the pressure of narrowing all the upsets in sports history to a top ten list!!" So I made my own job a little easier by narrowing it down to the ten greatest upsets of the last 28 years. Why? First of all, I'm barely 19 years old so I prefer to make a list out of things I know well and secondly because it sets the stage for the year 1980 to be included in my countdown. Foreshadowing? Hmm... (9 comments, 1627 words in story) Full Story By JDWC, Section Journals

Have you heard the news? Barry Bonds finally got busted for steroids! Hallelujah! As an A's and Dodgers' fan, a Giants hater, and a guy who has tons of respect for the game, I was elated when the news first broke. But then the inevitable question was posed, and I was shocked hearing various opinions on TV. I wanted to scream, "Are you KIDDING me? Should Barry Bonds be in the Hall of Fame? YES!" Alex Rodriguez is by far the best player available this off-season and there's four or five very rich GM's drooling all over him already. But according to his super-agent Scott Boras, A-Rod is expecting a contract in the neighborhood of 10 years for $350 million. More recent reports indicate that A-Rod would sign for $275 million, a "bargain" for the best player in baseball. While it would be foolish to deny that Rodriguez is the most talented, most valuable player on the market, he may not be the best option. While there are other third basemen available like World Series MVP Mike Lowell, Hank Blalock and Wilson Betemit, only one compares remotely to A-Rod. And only one may in fact be a better pick-up for a team than A-Rod. For teams going after the soon to be A.L. MVP, consider the younger, cheaper, uber-talented Miguel Cabrera of the Florida Marlins. The other day, a friend of mine in my dorm bet me five dollars that the Cubs would advance farther than the Indians in this year's playoffs. Naturally, I took the bet, for two reasons. First, he has no clue what he's talking about, and secondly, well, I do. After thinking about it though, I realized I may have made a terrible mistake. Because looking at the matchups this year, I can not remember an October I'm looking forward to more in terms of the talent and storylines of each and every match-up. It's hard to pick winners in a postseason when almost every series can go either way. But here goes anyway; JDWC's predictions and analysis for the 2007 MLB postseason playoffs and awards. In Major League Baseball, we all know who is `now.' Alex Rodriguez has established himself as far and away, the most dominant offensive force in the sport; Josh Beckett and Jake Peavy lead the way in respective Cy Young races; and new stars like Colorado's Matt Holliday are bursting onto the scene. Someone once uttered, "The future is now." Taking those words to heart, here are the top 50 future stars of Major League Baseball. We are now more than a third of the way through the baseball season. The N.L. West is suddenly the best division in baseball, the last two world champions are struggling, and the Yankees are making their inevitable surge. Time to revise my preseason picks. Let's see how they stack up. --My pre-season picks are the ones that stand throughout the season; this is just the picks I wish I'd made at this point. Preseason picks are in italics. And all stats and numbers are through Tuesday, June 19.-- (1 comment, 849 words in story) Full Story By JDWC, Section Journals
What the HELL are the Dolphins doing? Brady Quinn available at #9 and they go with Ted Ginn?!?!?!?! I hope they have a lot of faith in Ginn and whatever young QB they take in the 2nd/3rd round, because they just missed a golden opportunity. Here's a thought...how about the Niners take Brady Quinn with the 11th overall pick and trade him to the Lions for Calvin Johnson...Unless the Lions really have faith in Jon Kitna leading their team...
