Dizzy

Dizzy is what happens when you spin around on a tire swing or a rotating chair too long. Dizzy can happen when a beautiful girl walks by and you turn your head so fast to catch another glimpse. That could also be filed under whiplash. Any one else think there should be a HANS-type device that could prevent this? Can we get a ruling on this? Ok. Moving on, dizzy also happens to be a very good song by the Goo Goo Dolls. Dizzy is also how Yankee fans are currently feeling after the three game sweep in Fenway this past weekend.

I can still remember the day I stopped being a baseball fan. It was the day Tony Tarasco’s career was snatched away by a boy named Jeffrey Maier. It was the day that my beloved Orioles led the AL East wire to wire only to fall to the Yankees. The Yankees became a dynasty of champions. The Orioles became a dynasty of losers. Baseball was never the same for me. Innocence lost around the time I turned 11. I’ll tune in for a couple playoff games if the teams are interesting or the game is close in the late innings but the love is lost. I guess it wasn’t meant to be.

Somehow ten years later I find myself watching a Boston Red Sox spring training game. Flipping channels I saw that Daisuke Matsuzaka was pitching. Apparently hype does work. The hundred million dollar myth from Japan had piqued my interest.

Opening Day

After seven months of anticipation, more steroid talk, the drama out of the Bronx and the roulette game that is free agency, Opening Day has finally arrived. Opening Day is arguably one of the greatest days in a sports fanatic’s life, such as mine. There’s just something about Opening Day, the anticipation of it and the aura surrounding the first pitch, the first home run or the first win of the year.

I wonder about my favorite team, wonder where they are going. On one hand, they told me they wanted to get younger, save some money by developing their own players. Since Theo Epstein took over in 2002, he wanted to replenish the minor league system through the draft, have a constant influx of players to the major league roster. It might appear as though they have, I mean they are ranked in the Baseball America Prospect Handbook as the 9th best minor league system in the major leagues. But from their recent moves, I know better.

As a service for the Sportscolumn community, I went to the 11:30 AM showing of Invincible today. Who am I kidding, if I wasn’t going to write a review for SC, I’d have seen the 2:30 showing anyway. As an Eagles fan, I am obligated to see the movie. What’s the population of the Delaware Valley? 6 million people? Multiply by $9… Invincible is guaranteed to bring in at least $50M just from the Philly area alone.

Too Good For Your Team?

It was just past 11:10 PM EST last night when I was watching Sportscenter, resting after four days and five games of hell (I am a Yankees fan, but those four days were still hell regardless). Given the opportunity, I was tempted not to even stay up for the eleven o’clock Sportscenter, but just listening to Tony Kornheiser was enough to keep me awake longer than expected. And it’s a good thing I did because I have a message I’d like to send to Toronto Blue Jays Manager John Gibbons: I love you big man.
