Sigh... my dad says often, with a sad smile, that his revolution got bought and sold. I offer that it may have simply been misplaced somewhere in a sea of bong smoke, but that's neither here nor there.
It's becoming rapidly apparent that our generation will never really attempt to seriously seek change. The dissenters will complain, but do little else, content to vent in the comment section of someone else's blog. Somewhere in the process of upheaval, corporate became cool. Now, far as entertainment goes, I refuse to pass judgment on artists favoring cash over legacy, because quality stopped mattering to consumers a long time ago. At least it seems that way. Obviously, there's still great music and entertainment out there, which strays from the mainstream. I'd never deny that. The problem is, stupidity and ignorance are no longer sensibly ignored, these days embraced as a true dynamic duo, pillars of an artistically corroding landscape. Idiocy is placed on a pedestal. " This is why I'm Hot" is top ten material. Lyrics celebrating cultural bankruptcy are somehow legitimate. Does anyone really vibe to "Chicken Noodle Soup"? Is making it rain anything more than an ode, to the relentless vanity that used to be reviled? How `bout Kanye West? This cat really cracks me up. One second, he's a social activist, the next... he's imploring me to throw some D's on it. Following the teaching of Rev. West, I plan on spreading my fortune equally, between charity work and breast augmentation, any and all women need apply. That's what I call making a difference. Hell, this shallowness hardly applies singularly to rap. But, being a fan of the genre myself, and finding it harder to defend with each passing day, this is the example I utilize. / These realizations don't trouble me. No, truly frightening is the allure, the innate appetite for self-destruction shared by all. People will always be drawn to simplicity. Ignorance is bliss, because it releases us from the burden of thought. Intelligence isn't a gift, but a responsibility, and accountability has become an alarmingly abstract ideal. We have a choice. I'm not asking people to change their musical tastes. Hell, if you think I'm a moron, if throwing some D's floats your boat, than fine, God bless. All I want is to end the reign of Tony Montana. Why? Because Tony Montana wasn't a hero, he was a scumbag who shot his best friend and got his sister killed, who destroyed his family and profited from the misery of other people. Is that honorable? Oliver Stone wrote "Scarface" with the intention of profiling a ruthless drug dealer. He didn't want us to relate. I doubt he knew at the time, that he was creating a new American icon. .......... Here's a question. I wrote a monstrous profile of the 2003 ALCS, intending it to include a book that never really developed into anything. So, the piece is basically wasting away in my Microsoft word folder, and I was thinking I could post it on the site as a four-part deal leading into Opening Day, and beyond. I know I've written a ton about the Yankees-Red Sox rivalry, and I just want to make sure I'm not inundating the site with New York stuff. So, fellow writers or readers, do you have any interest in reading that at all?
Let me know.
