I know, I know. Everyone out there that is a college football fan has his or her own top 25 each and every week. It may be calculated very carefully. On the other hand, it may be figured out by picking names out of a hat. To be honest, this is probably the way the coaches do it. Did you see how they voted the last week of the season? I thought about creating a college football poll after seeing a few examples on message boards and personal websites. The problem with these is they always included a media poll in the average or formula. What about a poll that had no bias and no media influence? That is what I tried, and tried, and tried to do with the poll I created.

I created a poll for the 2006 season. It went well, but there were way too many factors to keep up with. So, I tried to create a different one for the 2007 season. I tweaked and punched numbers. I included this factor but not that one. It had become a hobby, actually an OBSESSION. I tried to keep it as "honest" as possible. I kept up with it starting about week six, and I could not wait for each weekend to come and go so I could watch some football and see what the results did to my poll. I really liked the way it was shaping up. So, the combination of factors I chose really worked out. I mean, there were some bashers, but there always is.

Then, the question came up. What is your formula? Well, I will tell you. Strength of schedule counts 85% and winning percentage counts 15%. A team receives --0.15 points for each loss. Teams also receive "bonus points" for "good wins" and "elite wins". I had to include a small factor called "logic points". That's really about it.

Did I mention that it was an obsession? I related everything to my poll. My mind worked day and night figuring this thing out. Is this factor weighted too much, or is that factor not weighted enough? What would happen if I included this? I had to finally tell myself and reassure myself that I was not getting paid to produce a poll for a major publication. So, I left it alone.

It is not meant to bash or praise any team.
