Site News: Photo Pool, new sponsor, Blogger Wanted, and writing contest update

Greetings from your friendly neighborhood editor. There are some site items I wanted to announce as we get into the summer... and as we gear up for football season.

1. For you amateur photographers, there is a new Sportscolumn Photo Pool powered by Flickr. If you have a Flickr account (and since they got bought by Yahoo, most of you already do), you can add your photos to the SC Photo Pool. For detailed instructions, click here. There isn't much right now in the pool but hopefully everyone will add their interesting photos. You can browse through the pool here.

2. Welcome to our new sponsor, Sportsinteraction.com. Sportsinteraction is an established online sportsbook that's been around since 1997. Check them out and let us know what you think. And hey, Jim Kelly would like to welcome you...

3. Congratulations to Matt Waters, our newest Featured Writer. Matt has been writing consistently great articles for a while now and it was only a matter of time before he was nominated and voted on as a featured writer. If you have a writer you particularly enjoy, go ahead and nominate them.

4. Help Wanted: we are looking for another blogger (or 2) to add to the stable along with RJ Warner and Jackson Govatos. Check out the blog for an idea of the tone and voice of the writing. But while sticking close to the lines, we want you to have a unique style and paint outside of them. So, if you can write and have an eye for interesting sports stories and can add some witty or insightful commentary, then drop me a line at editor@sportscolumn.com.

5. Finally, I know that a writing contest is long overdue and we are working on launching one very soon. You guys are great writers and you deserve a contest. It's been more of a technical issue than anything else. When the programming is done, we'll have a new contest. Stay tuned for more details.

I'm sure it's great for the website and all (which in turn is good for all of us, I suppose), but the timing of the new sponsor seems to coincide just perfectly with a new law in Washington state. It seems the powers that be have deemed online sports gambling to be a Class-C felony, right in line with child pornography and larger scale theft. So, for me, it's official: I'm going to have to move.

complete horseshit.  You can go get lung cancer at the 7-11 but you can't place a bet on your favorite football team.

I think horseshit is a great way of putting it. Obviously somebody in Olympia saw Two for the Money and decided gambling was bad.

What's next? They watch Requiem for a Dream and make drugs illegal, too?
