Predictions for 2005 Season Awards

Unpredictability. That’s one of the reasons why fans love football. Various factors contribute to this perfect storm: injuries, team chemistry, and player breakthroughs just to name a few. In my vanity, I will share my daring predictions for the 2005 season.

NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year- Even with a strong rookie running back class, this year’s award winner will be…Braylon Edwards. Yes, despite a mediocre team performance from the Browns, Edwards will become the go-to guy in Cleveland and looks to receive his fair share of looks in the red zone.

NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year- The reemergence of the Kansas City Chief defense will be due in large part to the play of Derrick Johnson. His sideline-to-sideline quickness and instincts to sniff out the ball will bring a toughness and edge back to the Chiefs. Demarcus Ware will be the runner-up in a tight vote.

Comeback Player of the Year- Like a Phoenix rising from the ashes, so will the new leader of the Arizona Cardinals, Kurt Warner, rise to become a pro-bowler once again. His success will be fueled by newcomer J.J. Arrington as well as Larry Fitzgerald, Anquan Boldin, and Bryant Johnson; Warner will become a statistical monster. Although the Cardinals will fail to make the playoffs, Warner will show his critics that he’s still quick on the trigger.

Offensive Player of the Year- After narrowly missing out on the rushing title last season, Shaun Alexander will bounce back with a career season. Not only will he have career highs in rushing touchdowns and yardage, he will also be even more involved in the passing attack becoming the premier multi-purpose back in the NFL.

Defensive Player of the Year- The Nick Saban effect will begin to take hold in South Beach and that is why Jason Taylor will be this year’s defensive player of the year. With more depth and options along with defensive line, Taylor will thrive and will be a pass-rushing maniac. In addition, the occasional 3-4 formation will have him drop back in coverage where his playmaker skills will be showcased.

Most Valuable Player- Despite all of the distractions involving Terrell Owens in the off-season, combined with injuries early on, Donovan McNabb will become this year’s feel good story. With a comprehensive understanding of the offense along with his athletic ability, the undisputed leader of the Philadelphia Eagles will have a monster year.

Coach of the Year- Once again, Bill Bellicek will be named the NFL Coach of the Year. With the odds stacked against him by the loss of three team leaders from last season, Romeo Crennel, Charlie Weis, and Tedy Bruschi, he will continue the system of success in New England and lead the Patriots deep into the playoffs once again. Overcoming the odds with continued success will place this award in Bellicek’s possession.

Super Bowl- After finally getting over the hump and defeating the New England Patriots, the Indianapolis Colts will find themselves in Super Bowl in Detroit. Their opponent, last year’s NFC Champions, Philadelphia Eagles. Two heavyweights will go at it and in the end the Eagles will come out on top as Super Bowl champions.

The 2005 season will once again be filled with surprises, drama, and excitement. With the preseason winding down and the regular season just around the corner, football fans everywhere are just kids on Christmas Eve.
