Hello everyone.  I am very pleased to announce the July nominees for the montly Sportscolumn.com writing contest.  The top 5 most popular articles as determined by average daily page views are chosen.   It looks like football is dominating the most popular columns this month as we have not 1 but 2 Preseason College Football Top 25 lists in the running.

If you haven't already done so, please read each of the following articles and cast your vote in the poll to your right.  The top vote getter will receive $100 from Sportscolumn.com.  Good luck, writers. Voting ends 8/15. (P.S. Please support the contest by checking out the advertisers on our site.)

In no particular order, the top 5 articles for July are:

  • College Football Preseason Top 25 By TrevorE2W

As I was sifting through a magazine stand about a week ago, I made one of my favorite discoveries.  That's right, I came across a college football preview magazine.  You know what that means folks.........we are almost there.  I can almost feel Boise State marching into Georgia; I can almost see Texas and The Ohio State University hooking up in what should be a thriller.  Remember when Bernard Hopkins called out Roy Jones and said to him, "Roy if you're not going to fight me, then you have to ask yourself.  Are you really a fighter?"  Well, if you don't enjoy the intensity, atmosphere, and feel of college football then you have to ask yourself.  Are you really a football fan?   Continue...

  • 2005 NFL Predictions by Stat Man

Who will go from worst to first? Can Pittsburgh possibly win 14 or 15 games? Can the Patriots win a fourth title in five years? A lot of questions remain unanswered, but one thing is stuck in most fans' minds- the dominance of New England the past four years. Although they should be a favorite to win it all again, they very likely won't, and the absence of Tedy Bruschi will be a huge reason why. Here's my predictions for how the standings will end. I may be far off, but this is how I see it: Continue...

  • College Football Preseason Top 25 by Lakers0411

A top 25 based on what the top 25 will look like at the end of the 2005 college football season. This preview will be the most accurate preview you will read summer.

  • NCAA Football 2005 Top 5 by mattuf1

The world of college football is a great one filled with glory and history, this year will be no different.  My top 5 consists of the teams I think will have the best chance at making a run for the national title.  I have broken down each team by what I feel is the good and not so good points of the teams listed.  Here is my top 5 for 2005.Continue...

  • 50 Of the Biggest Late-Round Steals Since 1970 by Stat Man

There are tons of great NFL players that are not chosen in the draft's first few picks- especially when it comes to wide receivers, kickers and kick returners. In fact, a majority of them were chosen during or after the fifth round. Going from latest to earliest draft position, here are 50 of the biggest draft-day steals since 1970, all taken during or after the fifth round:

Please vote for the best article, regardless of whether you agree with the writer or not on the particular issue.  For those who didn't make the July contest, the August contest is already underway so get your entries in.

Thanks,
Vin

Thanks for the support. I had hoped to get one article in the top 5- couldn't have dreamed of having two. That's a huge honor, and whether I win $100 or not, it really means a lot to be recognized like that. Best of luck to everyone that has articles up for voting.

Where is the poll to cast your vote? (#3)
by Stat Man on Mon Aug 08 2005 at 9:20 PM EST
I couldn't find the voting area that was mentioned in the opening paragraph. If we can vote for our own articles (which I doubt we can and don't think we should), I'll vote for my 50 best steals article, cause i worked very hard on that. If not, then I cast my vote for TrevorE2W. Are the only votes that are counted the ones that are mentioned in comments at the bottom? Just wanted to see.

never mind.... (#4)
by Stat Man on Tue Aug 09 2005 at 1:40 AM EST
I realized that we can't vote if we have an article up for voting.

actually the poll is to you right (#5)

it's like the presidential elections, you can vote for yourself.  You should take some photos of you voting for yourself like they do on CNN.

Making up the difference (#6)
by Stat Man on Wed Aug 10 2005 at 1:49 PM EST
Not looking now like I can make up the difference in the voting, but hopeful that I can. Wish that we could add votes for both articles together if we have two up for voting. If so, I'd be only four back. Looking like Trevor's article will win, but anything can happen.

Just can't seem to..... (#7)
by Stat Man on Fri Aug 12 2005 at 5:59 PM EST
make up the gap between my article and TrevorE2W's top 25 poll. I keep getting within five or six, but can't narrow the gap. Could really use the $100 (hey, who couldn't?), but there's always next month. Anything can happen over these next two days...

are you conceding the race? (#8)
by Editor on Mon Aug 15 2005 at 5:41 PM EST
14 vote deficit with 10 hours to go.

Whatever happens.......... (#9)
by Trevor on Mon Aug 15 2005 at 9:14 PM EST
Kudos to Stat Man for having two articles up for nomination and for the both of us getting so many people to vote in this poll.

indeed (#10)
by Editor on Mon Aug 15 2005 at 11:16 PM EST
this has been the tightest vote so far.

It has been tight...... (#12)
by Stat Man on Mon Aug 15 2005 at 11:30 PM EST
but I really wish I would have won, especially b/c I had two articles up for voting. I really could have used the money, but that's the way it goes. There's always next month.

[ Parent ]
Can't you come up with a better quote than...... (#11)
by Stat Man on Mon Aug 15 2005 at 11:29 PM EST
That stupid Randy Moss quote? How about TO's "I need to feed my family" to justify him wanting more than seven mill a year?

[ Parent ]
No I'm not conceding.... (#13)
by Stat Man on Mon Aug 15 2005 at 11:38 PM EST
but very few votes have come in during the past day or two, and I don't see how I'll have enough time to make up the deficit...
