I never thought I would turn this into some kind of series, but writing "Past and Present" got me thinking about how the modern business of sports has affected the fans. Ticket prices are higher than ever, stadiums are getting smaller in favor of more luxury boxes, and sometimes it seems as though the players, owners, and leagues don't care about the fans.

At UFC 86 the main event was the ultimate 205 pound showdown between champion Quinton "Rampage" Jackson and decorated challenger Forest Griffin. The fight was full of intrigue and ended up full of suspense. And then at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, the judges turned into crooked cops and stripped Rampage of his title.

More on: writers, sports writing contest (all tags)

She's been a featured writer for a couple of months now but I've never formally announced it. Please welcome Kris Pollina aka YankTank as our newest featured writer.  Despite being a Yankee fan, her columns were consistently great and she definitely deserves it.

Second, it's been a while since we've had an official writing contest so I am officially kicking off the March writing contest.  Every story submitted (except Journals) will be eligible for the Monthly Writing Contest. Every member can give each story up to 5 points. (You can find the voting console in the right column of the story page) The winner for the month is the article with the most points at the end of the Voting Period. That's it! When a Recruit Goes Bad

More on: Kevin Hart (all tags)

My high school baseball coach once told me that I should always have five or six different plays in my head at any given time. He was talking about baseball situations of course, but I've taken the advice to the next level and used it in my every day life. If a person can adjust in life to the many different situations presented, that person most likely will have a pretty enjoyable life. To counter that, one of my high school teachers told me that a person never changes unless they are forced to. More often than not, the reason they finally decide to force themselves to change, is because of the aftermath of a tragic event. Wednesday's college football recruiting scandal has put a deep burn on a day previously over hyped to begin with, while the start of a new wave of recruitments set out to prove their case to coaches across the country over the next year.

More on: monthly writing contest (all tags)

First off, congrats to dflack for winning the October writing contest!  His entry "Playoffs in 2008? A Look At The NBA's Eastern Conference narrowly beat out YankTank's entry.  For his efforts, dflack gets a $100 gift certicate to Amazon.com.

OK, now on to the November writing contest.  First prize is once again a $100 gift certificate to Amazon.  Second prize is a book by Phil Simms called "Sunday Morning Quarterback."  It's actually a good read even if it is Phil Simms.

Remember, all stories published in the month of November are eligible for the monthly writing contest.  Please read the general rules here.  You can also find the current standings here.

More on: monthly writing contest (all tags)

OK folks, football season is in high gear, the baseball playoffs are underway, basketball and hockey are right around the corner -- it's time for another writing contest. The story queue has been purged of old stale articles so get in there and submit your best stuff. Remember, on this site, we like opinion pieces -- leave the game day previews to someone else.

First prize this month is a $100 gift certificate to Amazon. The second prize is a set of steak knives. Third prize is you're fired. Actually, there is no second prize or third prize so make sure you're the best.

Here are the current standings for the October writing contest. If you have any questions, email the editor@sportscolumn.com.

Finally, I'd like to announce that bsd987 has been added to the Featured Writers list for all his excellent stories throughout the years here at Sportscolumn. Congrats, bsd.
