Breaking Down The Final Four

For the first time ever, all four top seeds made it to the Final Four.  The only plus to this in my opinion is that it should shut up everybody who claims the current tournament system does not reward the best regular season teams.  That is because the four teams remaining were without a doubt the best four teams during this year's college basketball season.  Outside of Kansas who had an epic tussle with Davidson in the Elite Eight, they all romped their way into this Final Four with convincing wins in the Regional Finals and Semifinals.  We have four bluebloods attending this event as UCLA, North Carolina, Kansas and Memphis represent the college basketball elite.  Without further ado, let's breakdown the matchups.

This is a true story. The names of the teams, the place and date have been intentionally left out to preclude the possibility of our team trophy being taken away because of the negligible contribution of two old men.

College basketball is heating up and thanks to the San Francisco 49ers I have had plenty of time to take in the action.  In fact, due to Mike Nolan's ineptitude and the fact that he coaches these games like an overmatched 17-year old college freshman worried about making a move on anything with a set of breasts.....I have been watching plenty of college basketball since late October.  Instead of doing my usual preseason Top 25, I decided to hold it back until the preseason ended and conference play began.  Our look starts in Southern California with a team that is long on talent but short on chemistry.

Fixing the BCS Mess

With every game, and every "championship", the system in place in college football (BCS) becomes clearer that it needs to be fixed. The easy solution is a playoff. But even that can't reach a consensus agreement. How would we decide is in the playoff? Would it be 64 teams like in college basketball? Wouldn't some teams still get the shaft? And would ALL the conferences agree (Big 10)? Not everyone can be satisfied, but he is THE plan. The plan to end all the questions and controversy surrounding the game today.

Why We Still Care - Why seemingly pointless bowl games still capture our attention

There it was.  The Motor City Bowl was on and I was glued to my TV hoping that Central Michigan of the Mid-American Conference would manage just one more score.  After they did and it was all tied up, I continued to watch as Purdue of the Big Ten drove for one last time and won on a late field goal.  The following day it was Texas -vs- Arizona State and then I couldn't wait until the next day when Maryland was due to play Oregon State and two other games were to take place.

I have no loyalty to any of these teams.  I don't even follow very many of their conferences.  Yet here I was following all the results and enjoying all the trappings of the yearly bowl season.

One Shining Moment (The Football Version)

Rarely is there a moment that everyone watching hopes will never end.

Of course, there was Muhammad Ali lighting the torch at the 1996 Atlanta Games; there was Jack Nicklaus walking up 18 at Augusta in 2005 for the final time; there was the tiebreaker between Bjorn Borg and John McEnroe in 1980. Ali was moving, Nicklaus was cyclical, and Borg-McEnroe, well, you didn't care who won, so long as the tiebreak went on forever.
