If that is true, that's even more incredible!

some critisims (#6)
by Jackson Govatos on Thu Jul 06 2006 at 10:51 AM EST
First off, how could Papelbon win the Cy Young but not Rookie of the Year? And why Verlander over him and Fransico Liriano? Why are Wright and A-Rod out of the starting lineups?

And I don't think Wells is an MVP. The Blue Jays are leading the majors in OPS and batting average, so an MVP can't really come out of their offense.

However, I do agree with many of your other picks. Good job overall.

Wells (#7)

Where would Toronto be without Vernon Wells?

Probably right where they are now... third place in the division and 8 games out of the Wild Card.

Papelbon (#8)
by JDWC on Thu Jul 06 2006 at 12:54 PM EST
I think if Papelbon wins the Cy Young Award, he'll also win Rookie of the Year...but with so many good A.L. rookies this year, I gave it to the other front-runner in my mind. And the reason he beats out Liriano is that Liriano came on late (although after Howard last season in the N.L., that doesn't seem to matter) and Verlander is pitching for a better team.

As for Wells, it's a close call, I mean there's all those players in the A.L. who are better, or have better stats, but in my opinion, Wells is the Most Valuable Player to his team so far this season.

Thanks for the comments/criticism.

Nomar (#9)
by Garrett Rudolph on Thu Jul 06 2006 at 7:40 PM EST
How can you neglect Nomar for NL Comeback player of the year? Missing most of last season with a torn groin, missing the beginning of this season with another injury and coming back to lead the NL in hitting and play gold glove caliber defense at a position he's never played before.

rookies (#10)
by Jackson Govatos on Thu Jul 06 2006 at 8:50 PM EST
The AL class of rookies this year could rival 2001 for best class ever (Ichiro took the MVP as a rookie that year). Verlander, Weaver, and Liriano could all contend for the Cy Young, as well as Papelbon.

by the way (#11)

Just so you know what I was talking about with the 2001 reference, Albert Pujols, Ichiro, Alfonso Soriano, CC Sabathia, Roy Oswalt, Adam Dunn and Jimmy Rollins were all rookies that year. That might be the best class of rookies ever in any sport.

excellent article (#12)

Would get my vote for article of the month if we had a writing contest....

Thanks, Vin. I wish we had a contest then! Haha, but to defend my picks, I chose Izturis, not Nomar because the Dodgers signed Furcal in the offseason to replace Izturis. They didn't know if he'd be back, and I don't think they had much faith in his ability if they signed Furcal to a three-year deal. I like that Izturis recoverred from his injury, is playing well AND is playing a new position/playing at all considering the circumstances.

You're right though, I think that Nomar would be the more conventional pick. But, I tried to think about all the different candidates for each award instead of just automatically putting down the big name that came to mind.

You are so right on about Thomas.  It has been amazing to watch him get his stroke back.  Last night's jack was awesome.
