many people believe that he wasn't even aware that he was taking the cocaine when he did.  i'm a little skeptical of this, but that's not the point of the story.  even if he was aware that he was doing the cocaine, nobody can deny what a tragedy this was.  everyone who knew him said he was a great kid and anybody who ever saw him play knows what an outstanding player he was (i wasn't alive either when this happened, but i grew up in a celtics house and heard this story many times.  i also did a lot of research before writing this article).  it's not so much that everybody "feels sorry for him", but rather that everybody can see that, from a basketball stand point, this was an incredibly unfortunate waste of great talent.
