HUH?? Those people have misinformed you then, as there is no bigger rivalry in California.
Cal-Stanford doesn't even compare...how many times have they featured Heisman trophy candidates playing for a berth in the Rose Bowl.
If anyone tells you that USC-UCLA isn't the biggest rivalry in the state of California; they're jealous. I'm born & raised in L.A., and believe me, there is none better (especially in football).
If you don't believe me...just look at what ABC shows every year....Ohio State vs Michigan at 9 am, then its USC-UCLA at 12:30 every year. There's a reason for that.
The only reason Cal-Stanford even makes a blip on the radar is because of 1982, and that great play where Cal wins the game. Even that year, both teams were terrible and just fighting to get over .500.
I guarantee you USC-UCLA will be a thousand times bigger than Cal-Stanford this year as well. Both SoCal teams are undefeated whereas Stanford just lost to a Division 1AA team...there's really no comparison.
