Charlie Manuel's hiring sorta fits in with the whole theme of "right move, poor fit" of the Ed Wade era. They had to get away from Bowa's hardcore style, so they went out and got the antithesis to him.
His in-game management skills aren't helped by the fact that the entire bullpen sucks, so whoever he puts in, he can't win. Tim Worrell had to be disabled with "psychological problems," so that gives you an idea of just how bad it is down in the pen.
Then again, why Terry Adams is the goto man in tie games for the 6th and 7th inning is beyond me.
Philly is just a hard environment to coach in, because the coaches never get the honeymoon period that exists elsewhere. Even when we get a guy with some success (re: Larry Brown) they take off for less hostile waters.
The only way to stop it all is to win something...and soon.
