Week 12 2008 NFL Picks and Podcast

BostonMac won the week last week with 13-2-1 but missed his lock of the week. Trevor and Vegas Vinny both hit their locks for big money. RJ is missing and won’t return his bookie’s phone calls since the refs screwed him out of his Steelers lock with some ridiculous illegal forward pass ruling.

The featured games this week (picked Against the Spread) are: Jets @ Titans, Panthers @ Falcons, Giants @ Cardinals, and Packers @ Saints.

Locks of the Week

[Editor’s Note: This year, we’re making the Locks of the Week a little more interesting as we have a side bet amongst the four experts. The person with the most money at the end of the year in Locks betting takes home all the money. Disclaimer: The amounts discussed are for illustrative and entertainment purposes only. Vegas Vinny: You know what I don’t understand? The New Orleans Saints. Why are these cellar dwellers getting all this hype? I feel like the entire NO season is based on their opening week win against the Buccaneers and the fact that Drew Brees leads the league in passing. Other than that, what exactly do the Saints have going for them? Their other wins are against Oakland, San Franciso, San Diego, and Kansas City. Like Derrick Coleman said, whoop-dee-damn-doo. They’re a fun team to watch — 1st in offensive yards but near the bottom in the league in defense. And they can’t beat any good teams.

So why are they favored? Are people still feeling sorry for them because of Hurrican Katrina? Is a win over the San Diego Chargers that impressive? It must be their home field advantage. I’m not buying it. The Packers offense and defense had a nice jump start last week against the Bears after a couple tough losses to Tenn and Minny. I expect that to continue this week. Brees might be the old hand who shows up Aaron Rogers on Monday Night but the Packers defense will come through while the Saints D shows its warts. Oh, and by the way, the Packers are 4-0-1 against the spread in the last 5 games. I’ll put $110 to win $100 on the Packers (+2.5). (Balance= $1115)

BostonMac: I can’t believe the Dolphins are actually favored over the Patriots. What kind of a bizzarro world are we living in here? Yes, both teams have the same record (6-4). Yes, the Dolphins are coming off three straight wins while the Patriots have lost 2-of-3. And yes, the Dolphins spanked the Pats in Foxborough in September. But does anyone really think the Dolphins are legit after barely beating the Seahawks and the Raiders, both awful West Coast teams who had to travel across the country to Miami? The Dolphins have been a good story, and the wolves are hoping to feast on the Pats and kick them while they’re down. Don’t expect it. Matt Cassel gets better every week and should seriously begin to get some Pro Bowl consideration. At the very least, he has made himself a very rich man this offseason when he becomes a free agent. The Patriots have had some tough injuries this year, but Bill Belichick teams always dominate in rematches against teams that had beaten them earlier in the season. New England GETTING a point? Sign me up. After all, I like money. I’m putting $220 to win $200 on NEW ENGLAND (+1). (Balance = $1090)

Trevor F: I love the Panthers getting a point against Atlanta. Carolina has the
stronger defense and is the better, more well-rounded football team. I
think they win this game which gets them the cover. Carolina needs this
to win keep on pace for both the division title and the bye. I see them
flustering Matt Ryan and getting up early. Then they should salt it away
with DeAngelo Williams. I’ll put $55 on the Panthers (+1). (Balance = $1400)

RJ: With the entire NFC focus being on the East this year, the Falcons and Panthers have quietly built this game into the premier matchup in a division every bit as competitive as the NFC Joe-Buck-Loves-You-Division. While Atlanta has made unbelievable strides with Matt Ryan and coach Mike Smith, the Panthers have finally stayed healthy enough to become the team we thought they could be the last two years and have become a dominant team in the NFC. The Falcons are coming off a tough home loss last week against the Broncos and the Panthers are trying to stay with the Giants in the race for home-field. Atlanta–excuse me–HOTlanta isn’t quite ready. The Panthers run the ball too well and win, even getting (+1). Am I broke yet? If not, 220/200 until I am. (Balance = $320)
