Locks of the Week

[Editor’s Note: This year, we’re making the Locks of the Week a little more interesting as we have a side bet amongst the four experts. Vegas Vinny: Week 1 of the NFL season is the hardest to pick. I think the majority of people who make money in week 1 are those who win march madness polls aka people who don’t know anything. It’s a complete crapshoot as preseason games offer no clue as to how a team will perform in the regular season. However, we get a gift from the gambling gods this year as they are giving us the NY Favres only giving 3 points against a terrible Dolphins team.

Bill Parcells will make the Dolphins a good team in the long run but Brett Favre makes the Jets better today. While the talk of the Jets making the playoffs is hogwash, I expect that the mental aspect of this game (we have Brett Favre!) will bring up the play of the rest of the Jets players. This is a pure mental play. I’ll put $55 to win $50 on the Jets (-3).

BostonMac: Tampa Bay, Last week I picked the Tampa Bay Bucs to finish first in the NFC South by default. They’re still a pretty good team though, and should be able to go into New Orleans and pull off a road win. Even though their offense is about ready to qualify for AARP cards, they’ve managed to mix in some youth and fresh legs and are primed for their best season in a few years. New Orleans’ routines were most likely disrupted this past week with Hurricane Gustav, and who knows what their fan situation will be at the Superdome, although it’s likely that most people will be able to attend the game. I do think, though, that the slight disruption of the hurricane is enough of an edge to give the BUCS (+3.5) the nod in this key Week 1 matchup.

Trevor F: If Cleveland and Dallas were listed as Team A versus Team B on paper with
the game located in Team B’s Stadium, I guarantee the line is either a
pick’em or Team B favored by two to three points. Cleveland getting 5.5
points in the Dawg Pound is ridiculous. It makes me wonder if Vegas has
been watching too much Hard Knocks. The Browns were 7-1 at home last
season and have an offense more dynamic than the Boys. Derek Anderson,
Jamal Lewis, Kellen Winslow, Braylon Edwards and Donte Stallworth give
Cleveland a plethora of playmakers. Not only do I think Cleveland covers,
I think they win outright in what will be a thriller of a game. The
Browns are a true sleeper in the AFC as they went 10-6 last year and added
Donte Stallworth. Take them and feel good about it. Browns (+5.5)

RJ: The first week of the NFL season is usually the toughest week to pick. Even though we think we know what teams are going to look like, we don’t really know. Guess what, though? I really know what’s going to happen in this game. I know that the Bears might have the worst offense in years. I know that the Kyle Grossman/Rex Orton combination will be miserable all winter in Chicago. The only excitement the Bears will provide will be when Devin Hester returns punts and kickoffs. I have a feeling he get plenty of shots on kickoffs because Indy should score plenty. This one should be over in plenty of time to watch the season premiere of Entourage. I love INDY (-9.5) in brand new Lucas Oil Stadium. 55 wins 50 for me.
