2006 NFL Week 14 Picks

It was an up and down week for the Sportscolumn crew in week 13 as Vegas Vinny and RJ Warner went 12-4 while BostonMac went 7-9 and Trevor went 6-10. Just as it looks like he was going to catch Vegas Vinny, Trevor goes and screws the pooch. But one big week can change everything. The Locks of the Week Race is also heating up so check that out at the end of the column. If you want to see how we stack up against all the experts, check out a very nifty expert picks compilation spreadsheet by our buddy Tokar.

The featured games this week are Baltimore @ Kansas City, NY Giants @ Carolina, Denver @ San Diego, and New Orleans @ Dallas. The podcast will be up shortly. You can download the podcast directly (running time 32 mins) or subscribe to the feed.

If you use iTunes, just click here and then click subscribe and iTunes will take care of the rest.

Locks of the Week

[Editor’s Note: This year, we’re making the Locks of the Week a little more interesting as we have a side bet amongst the four experts. The person with the most money at the end of the year in Locks betting takes home all the money. Disclaimer: The amounts discussed are for illustrative and entertainment purposes only. Vegas Vinny: The Colts have lost two games in the past 3 weeks and all of the sudden people are panicking. “Oh no, what if the Colts are showing their true colors? What if their close wins earlier in the season should have been losses?” Don’t worry about it. While it’s true that the Titans are playing good ball as of late, the Colts took a breather last week in anticipation of this game against the Jaguars. The Jags are the Colts main competition in the division and the Colts can sew it up (as if they hadn’t already) by beating them in Jacksonville. The Colts offense will regain its form this week and score a bunch on the Jaguars. Remember, the Jag are a team that lost twice to Houston this year. A win in Miami doens’t mask their deficiencies. I’ll put $55 to win $50 on the Colts (-1.5). (Balance = $1005)

BostonMac: I am going to give the Niners one more chance. They have been a virtual ATM for their backers this season, up until last weekend where they were covering for a while until a total collapse in the second half. But that was on the road, where San Francisco is a much different team (1-5) than at home (4-2). As I said on the podcast, teams such as the Jets and Patriots have learned that playing Green Bay can be a panacea (translation: “cure”) for all that ails a team. After the Jets beat up on the Packers last week, can anyone doubt that a team such as the 49ers with real offensive weapons like Frank Gore and Alex Smith can’t blow them out of the water at home? This game has blowout written all over it. I’m going to put $110 to win $100 on the 49ers (-4.5) and lay the points. (Balance = $1010)

Trevor F: I’m taking the Tennessee Titans getting 2.5 (at last check) against the Houston Texans. Ever since Vince Young assumed the reigns, Tennessee has been a very good ballclub. If they were in the NFC they would be right in the middle of the wild card chase. I’m not sure why Vince isn’t getting more Rookie of the Year props, but he should be. He’s a winner and his being a winner has rubbed off on the rest of the Titans. Jeff Fisher should give him a cut of his weekly paycheck as Vince saved his job. Tennessee not only covers but wins outright. I’m putting $110 to win $100 on the Titans (+2.5). (Balance = $1075)

RJ Warner: A rule that’s very high on list of gambling rules (besides, “don’t bet what you don’t have,” but we’ll get to that in a few weeks): BEWARE THE HOME UNDERDOG. It has burned me many times this year. But you know what? Screw it, I’m doing it again. They may end up being famous last words, but I love the Indy Colts this week giving two points to the Jax Jags. The Colts have been living dangerously all season, barely getting by teams they should annihilate. The Titans finally burned them, so Peyton’s Place should have that out of their sytems. They simply play to the level of their competition. Ask New England and Denver, teams whose houses they went into and peed on the rug. Also, the Colts have not lost two in a row on the road in over four years. The Jaguars have been on again, off again all season, and since they won last week, it’s their turn to lose this week. I’ll put $220 of my quickly shrinking “fun money” to win the $200. (Don’t worry Ryan, bigger bets are coming). (Balance = $405)

Ok  This is tooo damn hard. Can you guys give me some insight on  Saints at Dallas? Holy Shit Saints are amazing Dallas is amazing, I dont know what to do.

Saints Dallas might be the best team in the NFC (which doesnt say much) but I’m taking the Saints because the Cowboys are coming off a very big emotional game against the Giants.  As RJ pointed out last week, that’s been the pattern all year.  Teams coming off big important wins get knocked off the very next week.  Should be a great game.
