Let’s Make A Deal

With the trade deadline roughly a month-and-a-half away, the rumor floodgates will soon open up.  As contenders scramble for starting pitchers, left-handed relievers, and another bat, basement-dwellers become sellers, pawning off their more expensive talent to the highest bidder.  It’s a fun time of year.

As a lifelong Red Sox fan, I’ve been fortunate enough to see them in contention most years and July 31st is an important day.  Jeff Suppan, Scott Sauerbeck (or “Sauer-suck” as he was known as in these parts), Byung-hyun Kim, Cliff Floyd, Ed Sprague, and Larry Anderson have all donned the Sox uniform through mid-season deals.  Boy, we have a lot to show for it too.

So, with the deadline fast approaching, here are five deals that I would love to see happen over the next month-and-a-half…Boston Red Sox trade the rights to Phillies’ broadcaster Larry Anderson to Houston Astros for Jeff Bagwell… Okay, I don’t know if it’s possible or if the Red Sox still have Larry Anderson’s rights, but it would be nice to get the local boy back.  Sure, Bags might be over the hill, but Larry Anderson has to be 50 years old by now.  It would be a steal for the Sox.  Mr. Epstein, get this deal done.

Bronx Little League World Series Team trade Danny Almonte to the Houston Astros for Roger Clemens… I know the LLWS scandal was a few years ago, but this deal makes sense for both squads.  Clemens and Almonte are roughly the same age.  With Pettite injury-riddled, the `Stros need a lefty.  Clemens has taken home a College World Series and Major League World Series title, it’s the LLWS title that has eluded him all these years.  Also, I hate Clemens and he’d no longer be pitching in the majors.  I like this deal.

Montreal trades the Expos franchise to Washington, DC for the Redskins… The Expos need a home and DC needs a team… Problem solved.  I know the Redskins are improved which means they could probably compete in the CFL, but again I make no promises.  Plus, I can picture Clinton Portis hoisting the Grey Cup over his head.  It’s a magical moment.

New York Mets trade 3B prospect Dan Wright to the Kansas City Royals for Carlos Beltran…  Actually, I’m just trying to start a somewhat realistic rumor in the middle of this article to throw everyone for a loop.  Wright’s an awesome prospect and Beltran is a big-time player that will be a free agent.  Makes no sense, nor do I really want it to happen, but I wanted to show people that I know a little bit about baseball.

New York Yankees trade Alex Rodriguez, Gary Sheffield, and Javier Vasquez to the Yomiuri Giants of the Japanese League for 4 bags of baseballs and a used Subaru… As a Red Sox fan, I want these guys as far away from the AL East as possible.  The Yankees are just playing too well right now and I feel this could slow them down a bit.
